WAAAM

"A traveler without observation is a bird without wings." Moslih Eddin Saadi

Beloved’s business was supposed to be in Washington State for 10 day but when we got off the plane it was confirmed that our whole group (the guys he will be working with and our little family) were all going to need to go to Idaho. So, while the guys are flying there, we headed out on a car adventure and felt more in the groove with the normal way we travel (driving across the United States) and so we will met up with them on Thursday evening.

Beloved decided that our trip to Boise should include some eye-candy along the way. So, we traveled alongside the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. As usual, the Little Ones are notorious for pointing out God’s beautiful creation. And I feel so very blessed that I have been able to see the United States through their eyes the past three years. Some of the things they say just really crack me up. Yesterday, the competition was to exclaim that they saw the “best” waterfall and with so many to chose from Mommy votes that everyone won!

We travel so much that we have a schedule that we follow. We normally drive about 2 1/2 to 3 hours, then stop for lunch and have a walking break at some Museum or National Park. Then, we get back in the car to travel 2 to 3 more hours (during nap time) and then around dinner time we stop and get dinner. Then we head to the hotel for some swimming fun, a little home school, or a movie. So, keeping with our normal traveling schedule, we stopped for a quick bite to eat and headed over to a Museum that was just off the interstate.

The Museum was new, less than 3 years old, and it is called, WAAAM. WAAAM stands for Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum and it is located in Hood River, Oregon. This Museum was amazing. It is one of the best Antique Aeroplane museums that we have ever been to. Once you step right in the door, their volunteers greet you eagerly and will give you a private tour.

The Airplane Museum is in 2 large hangers. They have over 100 automobile and military jeeps, and over 75 Antique Aeroplanes. They preserve them all for flight! Yes, that means they all can be flown still and they have 5 specialized Pilots to do so. If you go on the 2nd Saturday of the month, they will bring out some of their favorites from their collection and give you demonstrations of them.

No matter what those volunteer's say, even if it is still in perfect working order,

I am thinking that I would have to say something if Beloved wanted to fly this thing!

There is no doubt that those early Aviators were quite courageous!

Here is a plane that is “powered” by the same engine that is in the motorcycle. Old Aeroplanes have the prettiest wooden perpallers. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. Some of them are very elaborate looking. I think they are just neat.

The Little Gentleman thought the plane with the snow shoes were awesome. And he asked me to take a picture just for him. I was told that is still pretty much how airplane snow shoes look today!

This is the way that emergency aeroplanes saved people before they began to use helicopters for emergency transport instead!

So many of our friends are Harley Davidson fans so I had to take a picture of this 1920 beauty. One thing that I learned is that many motorcycles have gremlin bells. They hang low toward the ground and it is believed that the bell keeps the gremlins from coming up out of the asphalt and destroying their bike.

I'll have to ask my Uncle if he has a bell. Do you?

Something else that I thought was interesting is how in 1920 and 30's in order to tell a pilot how fast the wind was going, they would put one of these air speed indicator on the wing. The air hits the needle and it moved to the number. It was the only way they could tell how fast they were going.

Isn't the technology that we have today simply amazing?

Here are the boys! Future Pilots?!

After our stretch the leg stop, we traveled through the Blue Mountains!

A quick glimpse as we were heading in….

We grabbed our hotel in La Grange and it was here that Beloved asked the locals what was the best Mom and Pops restaurant in the area. They sent us over to a BBQ restaurant where the décor was wall hanging of elk and deer. The center pieces were books about Oregon Tall Tales and the place mats were fun Historical Oregon State facts. Some where not so believable!
