Beaded Leather Jewelry Craft

"You might be a beader if .... you have four cabinets full of beads, but you don't have just the right color for your current bead project." - Bead Quote

My Dad/Mom has a big container of  new/antique GLASS beads, leather straps, jewelry clasp and such! They uses them for reenactment jewelry.
With my parents help we raided his supplies!
The Little Ones spent some time doing necklaces for the State Fair this week.

She made a key chain and a necklace/earring set.

 These are bone beads!

He made a glass and chicken bone necklace for his littlest sister.

Then, he made one for himself.
His favorite color is blue.

His favorite color is green!
So, he made a chicken bone/green necklace.

I do believe if given a chance they would take the opportunity to use every single bead if they could!

A Leather Treasure Bag

"Children remind us to treasure the smallest of gifts." ~KleinThis leather drawstring bag could be stained and stamped but the Little Man wanted a helicopter on it instead.

It was a quick craft that we squeezed in on such a busy day.

Perfect for all those little cars and heliciopters that he "treasures" and takes along on a car ride.

Emily Handbag Pattern

A woman's mind is as complex as the contents of her handbag; even when you get to the bottom of it, there is ALWAYS something at the bottom to surprise you! ~ Connelly
The Little Lady did another leather purse. This is called the "Emily Handbag" pattern. It is opened at the top instead of having a flap across the top. The Little Lady stamped it and stained the leather on both sides.

The little details...

Leather Journals

“I rate enthusiasm even above professional skill.” ~ Sir Edward

My Parents gave the Little Ones some materials to make a leather journal. You can find step by step instructions here at my Mom's blog. She even shows what it looks like inside. For our project, the Little Ones used stencils and markers on the leather. They enjoyed making this project very much! And, Beloved thinks they were so cool that he is going to make him one for his Pilot Check List. Although, something tells me that his will be done with a leather stain and not nearly as colorful!

The book we read: "How I became a Pirate." It is not a favorite.

But, this would be a good "Lewis and Clark" or "Indian type" of theme craft too.

Dasher Handbag Pattern

"When you don't have the skills to do it yourself, you rope those that do into teaching you."

One of my goals besides teaching academics is to make sure that the Little Ones have skills in trade too. And, sometimes that means I have to learn right along with them! Since, I am not a leather artisan I had to rope my Daddy into giving me some guidance as to what I needed and how to do the basics. So, off we went to the nearest Tandy shop where I bought some leather tools, a leather kit, and some stain!

The Little Lady chose a small leather purse for the first project. I bought the basic kit that had cut holes in the leather pieces already. My Daddy doesn't do this because he makes his own patterns. However, there is no point in making us discouraged the first go around is there?

The Steps: (She was highly supervised!)

1st the Little Lady (age 6) is lightly wetting the leather to prepare it for stamping.

Choosing a stamp is the hard part! She couldn't decide so she used all three.

So, she took a leather stamp and hammered the end stamp to make an impression on the leather.

The results of the stamping. The one on the right was just pressed into the leather so it had not dried yet.

Once the leather is dried the next step is to stain the leather. We bought a light brownish orange color and with a paint brush she painted on the stain.

Here she is staining over the leather that she stamped.
(Long strokes in one direction. If you get to much you can take a cloth to even out the paint)

Sewing the leather strings through the holes to piece the leather together.

Finishing up the purse with a clasp.

A new handmade leather purse to treasure for years to come! Even though I have been told that it is too small. It doesn't fit a horse or a horse book. So, it looks like we will be getting some more projects and equipment to do some bigger projects.
