Homescholing with Mr. Stebbing's Art Curriculum

"God has given all of us, to one degree or another, abilities in art that should be nurtured." - Stebbing

I signed up the older 3 Kiddos for art class.
So, last week, they spent 3 days at the "How Great Thou Art"  seminars for homeschoolers. The creator of the "How Great Thou Art" curriculum is Mr. Stebbing and he gave the classes.

Beloved sat with the Kiddos during their lessons.
His mission was to simply cheer them on and supervise the boys.
  Affirmation Exhaustion apparently!
He said, "This is to hard! I would rather go to work."
He made it through the fast paced seminars and my kiddos learned a lot, came home with some fun pictures, and have a new appreciation for drawing.

Beloved enjoyed the seminars and thought they were well organized.
He came home with the 3 year dvd art curriculum for me to teach one lesson a week!

Smashing books

Smashbooks - "The art of sticking your cool stuff into a book" - smashstoriesblog

A couple of weeks ago, my Mom made smash-books with the Kiddos.
They really enjoy their handmade nature books.
They have drawings through out them and they made little pockets inside to carry treasure.

This little book has had an assortment of coins and rocks in it.

We call it Bible Art

" The difference between a bad artist and a good one is: The bad artist seems to copy a great deal; the good one really does." - William Blake

I can't believe I found something that trumps Science experiments!
We needed some copy work and I chose something that concentrates on drawing the Psalms.

They read a passage of scripture, copy the theme of the Psalm, then draw the suggested assignment.
It is the new favorite subject!

The Little Lady's scripture drawings.

(You are to draw a tree planted by water)

(You were to draw something in a shelter)

(You were to draw what was out your window in the morning)

The Little Man's scripture drawings.

(You were to draw a shield with what you would put on it if you were to go into battle with the Lord)

(You were to draw your room)

(You were to draw what was outside your window -- campers, birds, and trees in this case!)

I am amazed at the individual drawings.
They don't pay attention to each other's drawings at all.
So, I really get to see how their brains process and interpret what they think things mean!
It has been interesting so far.

Kiddo Canvas Painting

An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one. ~Charles Horton Cooley

Decorating their tiny 1/2 bathroom with Kids Art!
No way can anyone say this bathroom is dark anymore!)
And, I don't have to feel guilt about not displaying their art  somewhere in the house.

Enjoying their pictures...

"Art is man's expression of joy..." Henry Kissinger

The Little Man (age 5) says this is his race car in which carries a lot of people.

Little Lady (age 7) sat a stuff-animal puppy on the counter and then she free- handed this picture while looking at it. She named her drawing "Patches".

I can't help but laugh at this one!
It sends me into giggles when I see it.
I have it on the drawing board in the utility room so I can give it to my Parents when I see them next.

Painting with Blueberries

Early American colonists made grey paint by boiling blueberries in milk. - Blueberry Facts

Barren River Lake State Resort Park in Kentucky

All week the State park has had activities for the Children every 2 hours. So, we did several of them which were being hosted by the volunteer college-age rangers that come to work for the summer.

This activity showed how a person could use flowers, berries and leaves to get color from natural ingredients.
This first part of this particular activity was collecting berries and leaves while on a hike.

The second part was to crush them up so they can have a hand-on lesson in how the natives and early Americans used berries and leaves for dye to paint their belongings.

Beloved is helping with the crushing up of the blackberries and the blackberries that were not ripe so we could have purple and red dye.

All the Little Miss wanted to do was eat the blackberries!

But, once every thing was mashed the painting began...

Swirlz Bird Art

"Painting is just another way of keeping a diary" - Picasso

The Little Lady came home and said, "I messed up. The art teacher said there is no right or wrong way of painting in art. So, we are going to say that bird with a big bill is a Toucan."

Coloring Sheets of Real Art

Artists are just children who refuse to put down their crayons. ~Al Hirschfeld

They aren't just ordinary coloring sheets. They are coloring sheets copies of real artworks with the History/Author information on the back. The Children enjoy seeing what the Artist did and learning about them but then they color it to make it their own. I am thinking Van Gogh would have an issue with his "Starry Night" being made to look like a "Sunny Day". As you can tell, she isn't to worried about it!

Busy Thinking of Daddy

It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: what are we busy about? - Henry David Thoreau

The big kiddos were busy making cards this past week for Daddy. She didn't want to be left out of the fun! And, if you suggest it, she gets her little heart broken and is quite offended.

Canvas Painting

“I've been doing a lot of abstract painting lately, extremely abstract. No brush, no paint, no canvas, I just think about it.” ~ Stephen Wright

But,that is the thing about having Children, I feel guilty when I just think about it!
So, we do it. It makes them happy. And, then afterwards I realize it took more effort not to do it than to actually complete the project. Oh, the clean up wasn't so bad either.

"Kid's Rock" at Swirlz

"I don't own any of my own paintings because a Picasso original cost several thousand dollars -- it's a luxury I can't afford." ~ Picasso

The Little Lady went to Swirlz. Isn't Swirlz such a cute name for a Children's art class?

This was her first time in the class and her first time painting on canvas. The painting project was called "kids rock" and they all did a guitar on canvas.

She has been all "a buzz" about what colors blend together to make other colors. What tips the teacher provided them if they messed up. I couldn't help but crack up when she said, "Oh Momma, there is so much to learn!"

A Busy Flight Drawing

"The essence of drawing is the line exploring space." ~ Goldsworthy
The Little Lady just realized she could paint objects half way into the picture to make it appear like more things are in the picture.

Beloved commented that this is the busiest flight pattern ever!

An Art Mask

“Are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it?” Pablo Picasso quotes
Beloved and I handed over a white mask for her to paint and then we went to do different projects. When I came back in the room she was finished with the paint and wearing it already. I was startled. It was more intersting than I had imagined. I actually thought she would keep most of the mask white and put horses on it.

There is no doubt that this mask is being begged to be apart of the dress up box for when we are acting out a story. I can also picture it coming out during the movie "The King and I". Can't you see her fluttering about during the scene where the wives are all wearing a mask to tell the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" story?

Jesse and Chrismon Tree In Construction Paper

"The Chrismon tree is highly symbolic, conveying the life of Christ and the meaning of Christmas."- Chrismon Tree Definition

"The Tree of Jesse is an depiction of the Ancestors of Christ through metaphorical pictures. It is a family tree linage from Adam to Jesus. - Jesse Tree definition

The family that lived in our old 1914 Farmhouse before us left a Christmas Tree in the attic. Obviously it was because it was no longer useful to them because it did not have a Christmas Tree base. After looking for a base for it for a few years, I finally found a red plastic one for about $3.00. Unfortunately, I have no ornaments for it (my other trees take them all up) but I decided to put it up in the house anyway. We strung white lights and then I decided it would be fun to have it be the Little Ones tree that they could decorate this Season.

Because we travel a good bit, I never feel like I have time to incorporate a lot of art projects into our schooling. But, on those months that we are home like in December, I feel like I have a little more planning time. With just a little bit of research on some color pages, I decided to let the Little Ones do a construction paper tree and have it correspond with the stories of Jesus' linage and Christ symbols for the Christmas Season.

Most of you will know this as the Jesse Tree or a Chrismon Tree depending on how your Church decorates their sanctuary. Although I can guarantee that most are way more sophisticated! ;)

So, now we have 3 trees! An all white ornament tree (No Touching!), the wooden ornament tree, and a very colorful construction paper tree! This one is very out of my comfort zone. It doesn't blend in with my decor at all! But, I am making some Little Ones extremely happy.
