Selecting a Dutch Oven

"When giving thought to buying a Dutch Oven you will need to shop for one that fits your needs. Dutch ovens come in a wide variety of sizes. Most companies refer to their ovens by the size of the diameter of its rim. They range form 5 inches to 22 inches." - The Complete Guide to Dutch Oven Cooking

When selecting an outdoor cast iron Dutch Oven you will need to have a flat bottom with three short, two inch legs. The pot will have a strong wire bail handle to support the oven over a fire or to use in moving the oven when hot. The lid will be flat with a rim flanged so that the coals will stay on the lid while cooking.

The domed lid cast iron "kitchen" ovens are really effective for stove or grill top cooking but they are not for cooking over and under hot coals.

  1. Thanks for the info! We enjoy using a wood stove to heat our home during the winter and I've often wondered if I could be able to cook with it if the power went out. Now I want to shop for dutch ovens! Knowledge is buying power!
