The Kentucky Quilt Trail

The Quilt Trail project began in Adams County, Ohio, when Donna Sue Groves, a field representative for the Ohio Arts Council, decided that she wanted a quilt square painted on her barn to honor her mother, a lifelong quilter. Donna Sue shared her idea with friends in the community, who offered their help. They decided that if they were going to paint one quilt square, they might as well paint twenty and create a driving tour to attract tourists to their rural community.  This tradition quickly spread into Kentucky and on into other states. And now, you can see them decorating many byways and highways.

I  thought it would be fun to share with you some of the quilt squares that we have see as we have been out and about exploring! Many of the quilt patterns, the barns, and the buildings are apart of the Kentucky Quilt Trail.  The quilt patterns  have fascinating stories behind them, many of which have been documented by the Kentucky Folklife Program.

Personally, my favorite ones are those that are hanging from all the unique Kentucky barns!

I live rather close (4 hours away) but have not ever made it to the show......but there's a northwesty destination kind of activity you could look in to and come visit up my way!
