Memorial Day 2012 Tradition
"It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray-haired. But most of them were boys when they died, they gave up two lives -- th...e one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for their county, for us. All we can do is remember." ~ Ronald Reagan - Remarks at Veteran's Day ceremony, Arlington National Cemetery Arlington, Virginia, November 11, 1985
Every Memorial Day our Family sends off Balloons in honor of those in our Military Family who have truly paid the ultimate price for our freedom! Our tradition is to send off the Balloons no matter where we are at so the places are always unique! Attached to the balloons is a note that explains our tradition, tells the person who finds the balloon where we sent the balloons off from and we ask them to email us to tell us where they found the balloon so we can track how far it flew! The balloons are normally found during plowing time and we always get wonderful notes back.
(side note: Apparently there is a helium shortage in the World?! So, helium balloons were hard to find! The red heart balloons were out of desperation! )
A lovely practice.
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic to get notes in return.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea...I remember doing this in school at the end of the year, then due to environmental issue they no longer allowed it. :-(
ReplyDeleteHope you and your family had a lovely weekend.
