"I don't like gourmet cooking or "this" cooking or "that" cooking. I like good cooking." - Beard
I have tried at least 20 new recipes the past 3 months. And, almost all of them have been just blah! (Don't worry, I haven't tried any of yours!) So having a really bad couple of months in the Kitchen with any new recipes and a few try and true recipe too, I was hoping that the recipe that was written on the package of beans from the Amish Market ( a stand outside of their home) was going to be delicious! We were pleasantly surprised by the flavor. It was different since most of the bean soup recipes seem to be tomato based. I liked the change! So, maybe, I am back on a good footing with my oven?!
2 cups of 13 Bean Blend
1 qt. fresh water
2 tsp. butter
1 tsp. lemon juice
4 tsp chicken broth
4 cups potatoes (diced)
2 cups onions (diced)
1 1/2 cups celery (sliced with leaves)
1 can (15oz) yellow corn
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp sage
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 qt whole milk
1 cup light cream
1 egg
3 Tbsp. Corn Starch
2 Tbsp. Flour
2 lbs of smoked sausage (sliced 3/8")
1. Soak Bean in water overnight and drain.
2. Simmer the first 5 ingredients together in a heavy kettle for 30 minutes
3. Add the next 5 ingredients and cook another 15 minutes till potatoes are tender. (Do not stir much)
4. Add garlic salt, sage, black pepper & milk (Do not let boil)
5. Blend light cream, egg, corn starch & flour together in a bowl with a whip till smooth.
6. Slowly add the step #5 mixture and heat gently to thicken. Add sausage and Serve.
Sounds delicious. How disappointing to spend all that time in the kitchen with just blah results! I know the feeling. I'm trying some new recipes with the family (healthier) and have been having so-so results. I'm not giving up though! ☺
ReplyDeleteLadies, You might be interested in this blog if you are looking for some new recipes. I have had a lot of success with their recipes! If you try any let me know. I would be interested in a "personal second opinion".

Let's us know how you like this bean recipe. I have a Mennonite cookbook that I dearly love and have tried many of their recipes, they were very good.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'm not someone who always wants tomato in everything, but I have also found that in soup, it makes a big difference. At least, in certain soups.
ReplyDeleteI am looking for new recipes, so thank you for the info. on that blog!
ReplyDeleteDear Carmen, thank you for such a sweet comment and the encouragement. It truly boils down to letting a "little out not "all" fall out", as you said so clearly.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have not forgotten your request about the hope chest. I need to find my original post from my old blog. This week has been incredible busy; really hoping I will have it done next week.
(((hugs))

Thanks so much for the new recipe. I am always looking for something new to try. I have already copied it and plan to have it soon, maybe this weekend. One guestion, the recipe calls for light cream, exactly what is this? I am going to check out the blog about mennonite cooking. I have a mennonite cookbook which I use more than any other cookbook I have ever owned. I love it. The name of my cookbook is Mennonite Country-Style Recipes and Kitchen Secrets by Esther H. Shank. If you ever come across this cookbook I highly recommend it. Enjoy your day and God bless.
ReplyDeleteDonna, The Amish "market" sales non -processed milk and their recipes are written for that. When I asked about it, they just told me if I didn't have any of their light cream, I could just go to wal-mart and substitiute it for any light or heavy whipping cream (from the carton in the milk section). (They crack me up! Because, the Amish in our area do tie up their horse and buggies up at Wal-mart!)
ReplyDeleteDonna, Let me know if you like it! The verdict is still out here at this house. It is split down the middle here! ;)
ReplyDeleteI will say that one child said, "Please stop making things with beans! 3 recipes this week is enough!" ;)So, I am trying "Baked Chicken in Apple Cider" recipe off the Mennonite girls can cook site. ;)
