Praying Scripture

Psalm 91

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

Do you pray scripture and put people's name in it? It is fun to do so. Due to Beloved's adventures, Psalms 91, gets heavily used in this house!  What do I mean about praying scripture? I change the entire passage by putting Beloved's name in it where appropriate.

An example? Look at verse 5 - 7, Beloved will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at Beloved's side, ten thousand at Beloved's right hand, but it will not come near Beloved.

Another example? Look at verse 14“Because Beloved loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue Beloved; I will protect Beloved, for he acknowledges my name."

Many know this chapter as the Psalm of protection. In the military community, Psalms 91 is known as the soldier prayer. Did you know that? Military Wives who have their husbands deployed a lot in our unit have it memorized well. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have prayed this prayer using his name in it. It is just a goody!

  1. I love praying scriptures. I have places marked in my bible with verses I think are good ones to pray back to God. I will mark this one as well. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

  3. I would love to share! My all time favorite one is Phillipians 1:9-11. Others are Phillipians 4:6-8, Colosians 1:9b-12, and I Thessalonians 5:16-24. During one of our Beth Moore studies, she showed us how to put our name or other peoples name in the scripture verses we were reading. I loved it. I had never thought of doing this before but I certainly believe God is pleased when we do it. Enjoy your day and God bless.

  6. Thanks so much for your visit to my blog today! If we ever doubt we are praying in God's will, we don't have to when we pray His scripture concerning our loved ones!
    Nice to "meet" you :)
