Clothing Consignment vs Calculator

http://www.babycenter.com/cost-of-raising-child-calculator

The Little Miss had a growth spurt! She is in size 3T now! Her little camper closet is small isn't it? ;)   It is  no more than a foot across but it holds her sweet little dresses just perfectly. All but two of these dresses were consignment buys this past month. (Under $40) Throw in a bathing suit (garage sale), pajamas, container of socks (5$)  bows (investment from sister's stash)  and bloomers and she is all set for the spring/summer. (Shoes cost me though- sigh!)  But, it really is just so simple! So Thrifty!

I played with the calculator with all sorts of scenarios. The calculator said according to income levels and expectations of college the amount you can expect to spend is $380 - $800 in clothing for her 3 year old age group for the year! So silly!

  2. I totally agree! How is it that people could spend so much on clothing?! I don't have the luxury of being able to shop thrift and consignment stores, but I do a lot of shopping deals/clearance online, and I know I spend much less than those calculations on clothes for my girls! I love your thrifty shopping and how you are able to fit it all in your limited space!

  3. I wouldn't mind a closetful of those pretty dresses myself - you're doing good!

  4. Of course if space isnt an issue, you can save all the clothes of the older ones and spend even less! *sigh* Too bad space is always an issue!

  5. You should see my clothing tubs taht are packed away! It is ridiculous. I have got to get them moving... out! 40$ on dresses are a little high for me but the Little lady was a different season and had such a huge growth spurt that time I didn't have much to pull out for the little miss.

  6. I agree that spending a fortune on clothes is ridiculous! At our church, we all pass clothes around among kids. Clothing that my son wore several years ago, is now being sported by my friend's younger son and it brings back memories to see them on someone else. My girls pass along dresses, and wear hand-me-downs from older girls. The most expensive thing we have to buy is new jeans. My kids always wear the knees out before we have a chance to pass them down. They are hard on pants!

  7. Nell, We have the boys jeans wearing out almost within just a few months of getting them. I have 5 pairs of cut off jeans for camping just since this spring alone.

  9. Great deals!! :-)

For the fish craft you asked about the sharp edges, they mentioned sewing it close with fish string but it is very hard to get the needle in and out. We added string in the top with the needle to hold it up, but that was it! LOL It is a cute craft and there are many ways to alter it and change the lips etc. This idea came from the school but when I googled it there were lots of ways/ideas to do it :-)

    Best wishes

  10. he he, just catching up on all your posts:) I agree, why would anyone spend that much money on a child's wardrobe! we love 'thrift' stores, we call them 'op shops' here in Australia. 'op' being for 'opportunity'. We have plenty of opportunities to save on clothing at these shops:)
